Aug. 17, 2010 TAIPEI TAIWAN -- RITEK CORPORATION, the largest optical-disc manufacturer in Taiwan and the only company outside Japan with the ability to produce double-layer Blu-ray Disc recordable (BD-R) discs, recently claimed to have begun trial-production of BD-R discs.

The optical-disc maker said that it will kick off mass production of BD-R disc in the fourth quarter this year, and the profit margin of such advanced product is approximately 50%.

Ritek made the statement at a recent R&D achievement announcement of the Science & Technology Development Projects supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). With official subsidy, Ritek pioneered in Taiwan the development of high-level double-layer and triple-layer BD-R discs meeting the BDXL (High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable discs) specifications by introducing advanced primary thickening meristem (PTM) technology.

In addition to being the first BD-R disc maker in Taiwan, Ritek said, its BD-R products are BDA certified. The company has installed a BD-R production line with targeted monthly output of 150,000 to 200,000 discs.

Ritek has been aggressively developing BD-related businesses, having kicked off production of single-layer BD disc for several years and will gradually launch double- and triple-layer products this year and 2011.

Currently, single-layer BD discs account for over 10% of Ritek's revenue, with the proportion to exceed 20% by the year-end after the new production line kicks off production.
